Such a shameful, dishonest take by @DanielJHannan - deliberate and cynical rhetorical sleight of hand.
The issue at hand is not the ubiquity of slavery. The issue is the offensiveness of comparing slavery itself to EU membership.

Slavery is the brutal forced subjugation of one group of people by another.
The EU is a voluntary arrangement between democratic states that can be terminated at any time - something which we are, in fact, doing.

Equating the two simultaneously trivialises slavery and insults our near neighbours who we purport to want to start a new relationship with.
