This £30 #FreeSchoolMeals thing is awful. Even if I was worried about low income families not spending it on food (I'm not), how does this stop them?
Even if these boxes really contained £30 of food, that's £30 saved from your regular shop. You can spend the saving how you want.

We used to get WIC support for our foster kids in the USA and that's the same deal. Big proscriptive list of things you can buy and a humiliating check-out procedure because you can't be seen to just give poor people money even though it would be cheaper to run and more effective

But that's Conservatives all over. Because some small minority might spend their "school meal" money on scratch cards, you invent a massive punitive scheme to stop them, even though it's completely ineffective.
